All-purpose polyester (default)
Plant-fiber garments are often labeled machine wash (FTC care line). Polyester all-purpose has give and wash life. Cotton 50 wt is a piecing choice, not automatically better in a shirt seam.

Start with the fiber, not the stitch
Cotton lawn and 70D ripstop do not take the same needle. A universal 80/12 will skate on nylon and chew a hole in voile. The fiber table is the lookup. The needle and thread pairing page is the next step once you know the fiber.
